IR SH CH GWENDARIFF WALNUT WHIP CW’15
Tosca had her first litter in January of 2014. It was a strong healthy but large litter and she was a great mum. Firm and assured but kind and loving and also very determined in her approach to the education and development mentally. A born natural she dealt easily with her 12 puppies, albeit we gave a helping hand where necessary. Most puppies went to super, loving companion homes and a few made their way to the show world. The show world of the UK, Ireland, Germany and Iceland. Never did we imagine her babies would go on to achieve such major awards and all still so very young.

Here in Ireland we have two Show Champions who actually are also dual Champions, gaining their UK titles too. In Iceland we have a national Champion who also has her International Champions award and in Germany we have a German Champion who also is very close to gaining his International title too. Tosca has certainly proven herself to be a great producer. We are extremely proud of the dogs and their owners and what they have achieved.
After Tosca had her puppies we thought we would campaign her in both the UK and Ireland. She gained her Irish Show Champion title and the Celtic Winners award and we were delighted when she was awarded the CC at City of Birmingham. She also had previously won the Reserve CC at Gundog Breeds of Scotland. Unfortunately fate dealt us a cruel blow and we were heart broken when our lovely girl, so famed for her big open gait, had a freak accident when exercising in the field when she severely damaged her tendon Months of specialist vet visits, medications, recuperation and tender loving care could not repair the damage. So we made the decision to retire her from exhibition.
The most delightful character, we felt confident she would shine once again as a mum. Such valuable broods do not come by very often and her previous puppies had already proved to us how good her qualities were as a brood. So now what to mate her to – after careful deliberation we took the decision to do something new to us. To repeat the mating was a gamble as it doesn’t always equate that things will be just as good next time round Dad, Jamie was getting older but had certainly proved his worth as a Sire for us and also for other kennels. We concluded that he would be her mate. The matings took place and then of course the wait began. Confirmed in whelp, we were delighted.
Tosca had her babies and once again relished in her maternal duties. Her little friend Cilla was also busy with her brood and they each respectfully dealt with their babies but would wait for each other to go for a run in the fields, to play and just let off some steam. It was thoroughly entertaining watching them come back into the house and go to each respective whelping room with not an ounce of anxiousness towards each other. As the days and weeks developed they interacted with each other more and each might casually walk into the others room to lend a helping hand. Mother Nature at her best and a privilege to witness.
Finally the puppies had outgrown their indoor space and it was time to move them to the Puppy House. Thankfully the weather was warm so the move was seamless. Putting the litters together was the best option for them and the fun and games we witness every day is priceless. All puppies are individually marked to identify them – this helps us identify character traits and general development of social skills. Both Cilla and Tosca are thoroughly enjoying rearing this large brood together – they are a team but they each have a very distinctive way of dealing with the pups that is individual to them. I suppose it’s just like each of our own styles of parenting skills is different. The puppies are happy to feed off either mummy and both girls attend to the pups every need no matter which litter they are from.
This has been a great deal of hard work, long hours late into the night for 4 full weeks but it has been the most rewarding experience. There is not a day goes by that we don’t giggle and laugh at the puppies antics and the sheer love and affection these darling innocent little bundles of red fur give is infectious. It’s been the best days of hard work ever - we’ve both loved every minute of it.
Now the excitement unfolds as the puppies approach their full potential before leaving us to go to their new homes. We hope you will enjoy sharing this fun filled experience with us through our pictures and videos posted on the litter pages herein.
Below we have added some photos of other family members within the pedigree of these new babies for your perusal. Enjoy!
