What a dilemma …… Will we? Won’t we? That’s all we said as soon as Cilla came in season. We knew that Tosca was definitely having a repeat mating to Jamie before he became too old to be a dad, but to tackle two litters at once was just crazy !......... or was it ?!
The two girls were best friends. They loved each other and had such a definite bond. We worried if things might change within our small dog family unit. What if we have too many puppies? What if there are complications? Could we both manage with the work load – yes we knew we had the work ethic to do it but the physical was something else. We decided to leave it until Cillas next season so I checked my records. Not a good idea now – Cilla only came in season every 12 months which would result in her only going back to the show ring aged approximately 5 and a half years old. This lovely girl and her sister Babs, had had an illustrious puppy/junior career and Cilla had been Best Puppy in Breed at Crufts in 2015. She was such an exciting prospect – so sound and stylish on the move and with good height and good conformation. We didn’t want to loose the virtues this lovely girl had to pass on to her offspring. She had taken ages to grow her coat and mature and we knew that a litter would only help aid the maturing process.

Cilla had been created with a view to her being mated back to our own dogs. On this occasion we had decided on the very beautiful Peanut who, although young, we could see his potential…. Little did we know that at the show after Crufts, Peanut would become a Champion in the UK and one week later he would follow it up with another title here in Ireland.
Now the wait began – and the worry! I suppose we are very fortunate to have excellent facilities here at Gwendariff with plenty of ground and panoramic views, and only the sheep and the cows to listen to. Most importantly, our dogs or puppies are never left alone. Now time to say a huge THANK YOU to the girls for all their help and hard work during this busiest of times for us.
We had the girls scanned to give us more time to prepare and yes, both girls had babies on board! Was this really such a good idea………. ?
Preparations began and although we had a good feeling that the girls would be fine together we decided to give them each the privacy and security of a whelping room each. Whelping beds in place now the wait began. First stage labour happened with Tosca and the very next day Cilla joined her. It really was looking like both litters would come in close proximity to one another. Late in the night Tosca had her first puppy. And Cilla was puffing and panting in the next room. Maybe this wasn’t such a good idea after all! But in true Cilla style she just calmly took it all in her stride and it was almost as if she knew we were busy. Tosca, traditionally a slow whelper, had her last puppy at 8 am. All washed and cleaned up, nice new bedding in place, mum all settled with her babies so all I needed now was a few hours sleep. So over to Alec it was. Quietly and without any fuss Cilla delivered her first puppy 4 hours later. No drama, just settled and comfortably delivering the puppies 20 minutes apart. Bless her she had everything finished by 4 pm. Vet checks done to both girls and their broods at 6 pm and now the long hours of watching, helping, feeding and enjoying began.
Mother Nature truly is an amazing thing to be priviledged to be a part of…….. no matter how many puppies one brings into the world, each and every one is special. As a dedicated breeder your instinct is to fight to save the lives of every single puppy – relying on your instinct and years of experience to pull you through. Every whelping is different, every bitch is different in her needs and how she handles the whole experience.
We are proud of our beautiful girls and what they have allowed us to achieve. This dog life has given us so many peaks and troughs – the highest of wins, the biggest of smiles, so much laughter, and of course the lows – the heart breaking decisions, the saddest of times, the heaviest of hearts. But we wouldn’t change a thing. We’ve met many friends from all over the globe, we’ve enjoyed friendships, holidays and many social events, learned so much about other breeds, and developed genuine cherished close friendships that we believe are just ‘like family’. All thanks to our beloved reds. We couldn’t have enjoyed such a wonderful life without these special girls and what they have given us. We are proud once again this year to be the Top Breeder in the UK at this point in the competition.
Gwendariff Boys and Girls – thank you for making our lives so special.

Both Cilla and Tosca are thoroughly enjoying rearing this large brood together – they are a team but they each have a very distinctive way of dealing with the pups that is individual to them.
This has been a great deal of hard work, long hours late into the night for 4 full weeks but it has been the most rewarding experience. There is not a day goes by that we don’t giggle and laugh at the puppies antics and the sheer love and affection these darling innocent little bundles of red fur give is infectious. It’s been the best days of hard work ever - we’ve both loved every minute of it.
elow we have added some photos of other family members within the pedigree of these new babies for your perusal. Enjoy!
